Many patients want to know when and how to style their hair after receiving a hair transplant. One of the most popular inquiries we receive is, "How short can I cut my hair after a hair transplant?" We also discuss whether it is acceptable to shave your head. Here are some things to consider before your first post-operative visit to the barbershop or hair salon.

The surgical procedure you choose heavily influences the length of your hair after a hair transplant. Patients who have had FUE hair transplants can usually wear their hair very short, like a number 1 or 2-grade cut. Some of our patients can shave their hair to a grade 0 after FUE surgery.

Following a hair transplant, some scabbing will occur in the recipient area of the scalp. Initially, you may experience swelling and soreness, but these symptoms should subside quickly. The grafts are extremely fragile during the first 5 days after the implant, and you should not touch them.

We typically recommend that people wait 8–10 days before cutting their hair. The grafts are secure at this stage, so you should be able to have a haircut without hurting them or endangering your recovery. Remember that waiting longer heals scars and redness and thickens hair. It's also worth mentioning that noticeable new hair growth normally doesn't appear until about 4 months after a hair transplant, with the majority of patients experiencing growth between 5 and 12 months. We invite you to come in for a check-up or send us photos after surgery to evaluate your scalp and ensure good healing.

Buzz Cut After Hair Transplant

"Should I get a buzz cut after FUE transplants?" is a popular query during consultations. The in-between moment after hair transplant surgery, but before new hair grows in, offers some intriguing questions. During this transitional period, many of our patients have questions and concerns regarding how to style their hair and what the best haircut after a hair transplant would be. Finally, keep the following factors in mind when considering a buzz cut after FUE:

If you're considering getting a buzz cut, you'll generally want your hair to be even on the sides and top until the new hair grows in. If you have FUE transplant surgery, the donor area's scalp will mend in at least 14 days, although it may take longer. Many doctors still recommend not shaving your entire head after the initial recovery phase is over.

Hair clippers and razors are not sterile, especially in a barbershop environment. If there is scabbing or raw skin, contact with non-sterile tools can lead to infection. This could have fatal implications, especially for delicate newly transplanted hair grafts. The follicles will be exceedingly fragile at first.

While current hair transplant treatments cause little to no scarring, there will be some apparent scarring in the first few weeks. The scars will be more noticeable if you chop your hair shorter. You have complete control over the decision to get a buzz cut, provided your scalp has fully healed. It all depends on how comfortable you are with your scars being visible.
